You may have heard conflicting reports about the benefits of alkaline water. Many doctors, medical professionals, and pharmaceutical companies say that it is all 'quackery'. But they say that about everything they cannot sell and distribute, such as herbs, and various homeopathic remedies with a proven track record. And a lot of the benefits claimed are from the places that sell Ionizers, or bottled water.
But, a lot of the claims are also from people who actually use alkaline water, and their health has improved measurably. This is a matter of record, and is pretty conclusive.
Let's start by establishing what alkaline water is, and is not. Alkaline water is water that has a pH of 7.1 or greater. Every liquid has a pH, and it is measured on a scale from 1 to 14. Litmus paper changes color according to the amount of acid, or alkaline in a liquid, so it is the most commonly used instrument to measure a substances pH. A reading of 7 is neutral, and anything below 7 is acidic. Most alkaline water is from 7.5 to as high as 9 on the pH scale. Natural water from glaciers and streams average a pH of 7.5 to 8. The famous Holy Water from Lourdes, with documented positive results, has a pH of 8.5.
Tap, and most bottled and filtered water has an average pH of 5.5 to 6.7. Human blood plasma has a pH of 7.38 to 7.42, and will go to extraordinary lengths to maintain that level, up to and including shutting down systems. A pH above, or below this level in the body causes irreparable cell damage.
So what happens if we drink water that is acidic? Our bodies are tough, and have lots of protective mechanisms to allow us to use things outside our normal range in emergencies. One of these is the ability to keep our body at the proper pH, so we can eat things like tomatoes, and citrus fruits. To do this, the body has to use various chemical processes to either neutralize acidity, or decrease excess alkalinity. Neutralizing acidity is harder on the body's systems and uses up more resources. Having to do this all the time puts an abnormal strain on the body's processes. Over time, we pay a price for it. Water, with a pH of 7.5 or higher, is enough to balance the acids we take in by a process called 'buffering'. Simply stated, the acids, and alkaline balance each other out to the correct pH, saving the body’s resources for more important tasks, like fighting off diseases, and boosting the immune system when needed.
Nature creates alkaline water by moving it over rocks and soil. This oxygenates it, and allows minerals to adjust the pH to the correct level. It’s a proven system that has worked for hundreds of millions of years. There are devices on the market now that duplicate this process. They duplicate the natural process of agitation, light absorption, and other natural processes that render water to the correct usable form, known as structured water. People who use this water tell of sometimes dramatic results, such as more energy, a fresher, more 'clean' feeling, less heartburn, and many other health improvements. The best way to test the effectiveness of alkaline water is to try it yourself. It's been said that the “proof of the pudding” is in the eating. If this is really true, then the proof of the water would be in the drinking.
